Jani Kallankari is one of Verkotan’s founding members. His career started back in 1999 in Nokia, when the phones were black and white, and Nokia 7160 was the hottest fashion. At the time, Jani was working in user interface (UI) coding. After UI coding, he moved on to the development of OTA testing at Nokia and has since worked in the field of OTA testing. In 2015 Verkotan was founded by Jani and four other founding members.
What is your role in the company?
I am the chief scientist at Verkotan. My main tasks include developing new test methods and improving and implementing them into our operations. Also tailoring our test solutions to suit our customers’ needs is part of my daily tasks too. We have also participated to many collaboration projects such as, WePe project, Industrial Internet project RelCOvAir, Ai4Green and Entry100GHz in which I have been involved in.
What was the main driver for you to become an entrepreneur?
Entrepreneurship gives you the freedom to innovate more freely based on your own interests. As being an entrepreneur, I can satisfy my personal curiosity. I also like that entrepreneurship gives me the possibility to do tasks in a wide spectrum.
What have you learned about entrepreneurship?
I have learned that plans can change quite quickly, so you cannot plan things too strictly. As being an entrepreneur in a company, there are ups and downs, and you just have to be flexible and able to adapt.
What are the values that drive you?
My motto is “casually but logically.” I like new and different challenges.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
As being an entrepreneur in a small firm, you have multiple roles: you have to act as a technical support, scientist, economic genius, HR person, et cetera. You have a very wide job description. There are also many things that need to be taken care of at the same time, but luckily, we have skilful professionals working at Verkotan to help us complete the tasks. Verkotan also has 5 entrepreneurs, so the responsibilities are shared, which is nice.
What is the main challenge within the industry and how do you respond to that in your everyday work?
Radios and antennas are getting more and more complex and there are new requirements to get bits travel faster but more cost effectively and with less electricity. These new features require more effective wireless performance testing so that the testing can be performed in a reasonable time. Also, the whole radio system must be understood (antennas, signal processing and the hardware) to be able to perform the test service effectively. Technology is also developing in a fast pace and acquiring new information as soon as possible can be challenging. At Verkotan we are educating ourselves with regular training to keep up with the rapidly changing world of wireless testing.
What are your personal features that have affected your success at work?
I have a wide-ranging interest towards technology. I am also good at outlining the whole picture.
What are the things you like the most at Verkotan?
There is a good number of challenges, and every day is different. We also have a very nice working environment here.
