Meet Marko Joensuu, OTA Team Leader at Verkotan

Many of Verkotan’s employees have previously built their careers at Nokia, and so has Marko. Marko has been working for Nokia for approximately 15 years in different positions, in roles such as specialist and leader. Also, he has been developing his knowledge through leading antenna product development, working as a project manager, and being responsible for technical sales at multiple Chinese companies. Most recently, Marko worked as a project manager at Orbis Systems. Now, in his current position as an OTA Team Leader at Verkotan, he is responsible for production planning. In practice, this means scheduling of measurement capacity and resources. In addition to many other tasks, Marko’s responsibilities include leadership tasks at the OTA team, providing technical support when calculating offers, and supporting the new method development at Verkotan.

Marko is also passionate about sports and outside his job as an OTA Team Leader he has been coaching students at an upper secondary school specialized in sports for a few years in Oulu. He also coaches junior volleyball players and takes care of the physics side of the baseball team playing at the top league level in Finland.

What is the main problem within the industry and how do you respond to that in your everyday work?

Of course, the current situation regarding the coronavirus affects our everyday work also here at Verkotan. A major concern and an important issue is the health status of the entire company’s employees, which has been thought through and implemented throughout a variety of activities to be able to run the production normally. Also, 5G is starting to become more widespread and the development of new methods related to that area are progressing well.

On the customers’ side as well, the effects of the corona outbreak can be seen in slightly reduced or rather shifted orders.

What are the values that drive you?

In addition to the people around me, the team- and customer satisfaction and my drive for self- and team-development. I love learning new things.

What behavior or personality trait do you attribute your success to and why?

I am an approachable person who deeply cares about my team as well as my customers. I would also say perseverance as well as my willingness and ability to work towards the long-term goals.

What are your impressions from working at Verkotan so far?

Verkotan has a versatile customer base and as new measurement methods are constantly being developed. The work remains interesting and challenging. Verkotan’s staff is motivated to perform accredited measurements in accordance with the quality requirements and to further develop these methods and processes. Even within the framework of quality requirements, you are still able to influence and develop your working methods and processes.

What is the most challenging aspect of your work?

At times, customers’ products are challenging to measure due to complex product features. Also scheduling large measurement cases can sometimes be difficult.

How did you find joining the team when you first started at the company?

I already knew almost half of the staff due to my background at Nokia, so it was easy to get to work. The premises and some of the measuring chambers are also familiar from Nokia’s time. For me, the new employees are very relaxed and helpful, as well as eager to learn and do new things. Thus, it was easy to get along with them from the beginning.

How is the working atmosphere?

The atmosphere at work is relaxed and the team gets along well with each other. There is a perfect mix of young and eager guys as well as the slightly more experienced ones.

Do you feel the job is challenging enough for example in terms of knowledge and experience?

Thanks to the existing and new customers, novel measurement systems and methods are constantly emerging, and as the customers have new measurement needs, the work constantly requires new things to be clarified and capabilities to be validated.

Would you like to add a few overall comments regarding your work, company, or team?

It is awesome to be back at the roots where I started 9 years ago. Feels great to be back at work where the environment, co-workers, and customers are already familiar. Also, the challenges I come across in my work can sometimes be repetitive, but the advanced technology brings its twist to it.
