RAN and O-RAN

Radio access network (RAN) means a network infrastructure used for mobile networks; it consists of large networks of base stations. RAN connects user devices to other parts of a network through radio connections. Mobile phones are always first connected to a RAN through which they connect to the internet or network. Global telecommunications networks are shifting towards 5G and more open radio access networks. O-RAN alliance is the key factor shifting from traditional closed networks to more open and flexible radio access networks.

The term Open Radio Access Network is term used for standards supporting interoperability between equipment of different vendors for Radio Access Network interfaces. O-RAN alliance is necessary, because now major RAN providers provide equipment and other network functions to which they have proprietary rights, and no third-party equivalents can be found. This reduces flexibility and competition.

O-RAN will change all this; the main RAN infrastructure will not anymore be limited only to main RAN vendor’s equipment. This will shift the Radio Access Network industry towards more open, virtualised, intelligent, and fully interoperable mobile networks.

Verkotan and O-RAN

We have joined the O-RAN Alliance to help with beamforming antenna and RF testing. We offer testing according to 3GPP 38.141-2 or customized testing solutions. We have the capability to test O-RAN and 3GPP devices. We also contribute to research and development regarding over-the-air and conducted testing of beamforming antennas. Our services will help RAN equipment providers, from start-ups to large corporations, to get their products on the market quickly and ensure they are ready to be used in radio access networks. We also offer OTA benchmarking of different RAN equipment for network operators to ease the process of selection of equipment.
