Background: ISED Published Test Methods for Nerve Stimulation Exposure Limits In September 2016, the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) agency released for comments, the draft document of the “supplementary procedure for assessing compliance with RSS-102 nerve stimulation exposure limits”. According to the document, the equipment that transmits between 3 kHz – 10 MHz frequency range should be tested for RF exposure. In practice, electric and magnetic field strength generated by the device is measured. The procedure became mandatory in March 2017.
Why low frequency RF exposure measurements need to be done?
Public concern about the possibility of health risks resulting from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted from various wireless devices and their infrastructure in living, working and school environments continue to be an issue in Canada and the rest of the world. Measurements are done in order to ensure the devices used by the public are safe to use.
What kind of devices need to be tested?
Canada: All devices sold in Canada (ISED requirement), which transmit between 3 kHz and 10 MHz need to be tested according to SPR-002 – Supplementary Procedure for Assessing Compliance with RSS-102 Nerve Stimulation Exposure Limits.
According to ISED, examples of devices used between 3 kHz and 10 MHz include, but are not limited to, electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems, metal detectors, radio frequency identification (RFID) exciters, readers and tags, tire pressure monitoring sensors (TPMS), vehicle security systems and wireless chargers.
EU & USA:In addition to Canada, also EU (EN 62311) and USA (KDB 680106) require wireless chargers to be tested with similar test methods.
